Riding the Spruit

Some time after Sabie I was introduced to riding at the Spruit.

Sjoe now this is one of my most favourite places to go riding.  I still cant get over the fact that in the middle of Johannesburg there is a huge green belt that one can ride through.  I love riding in to the botanical gardens at Emmarentia and seeing the ducks on the water at them dam.  On the weekends there are so many people walking, running, pushing prams, riding bikes, taking dogs for walks, paddling on the dam.  When you see this it makes you realize just how blessed we are with such incredible weather and nature.  Going from Fratelli’s at the bottom of Craighall to Emmarentia is a lovely ride, not in the least bit technical, just nice to be outdoors on the bike.  We did ride in the other direction, from Fratelli’s to Paulshof and that’s substantially more technical but certainly rideable.  One interesting section is the river crossing just before the PnP on William Nicol – that’s not rideable. You have to be able to portage – pick up your bike and ‘leap’ across natural stepping stones.
